The Golden Lotus
In the middle of the Ming dynasty, eunuchs dominate the court. Minister of War Yu Qian is framed, imprisoned, and his household is sentenced to death, leaving only his son and daughter to be exiled beyond the frontier. The Eastern Depot eunuch Cao Shaoqin tries to eliminate the children and sends assassins after them, only to be blocked by Yu Qian's former follower Zhu Ji. Cao then sends his trusted men Pi Shaotang and Mao Zongxian to Dragon Gate Inn, the last stop before the pass. At the same time, the righteous swordsman Xiao Shaozi arrives to meet the innkeeper and plan a rescue, while Zhu Ji and his cross-dressed sister Zhu Hui also reach the inn. The three parties test one another's identities and motives, quickly falling into a chaotic fight. As Cao Shaoqin races toward Dragon Gate Inn, his formidable martial arts make him the final enemy the heroes must face.
Xiao Wu
Xiao Wu (Wang Hongwei) is an incorrigible pickpocket in Fenyang, Shanxi. Even during a police crackdown, he keeps looking for chances to steal. Yet beyond the label of thief, he is deeply attached to the past and to traditional ties; family and friendship still carry real weight for him. His old relatives and friends, however, now treat him like a bad omen and keep their distance. Pushed to the margins, Xiao Wu can only search for small forms of comfort. One day, while singing in a karaoke bar, he meets the hostess Hu Meimei (Zuo Baitao). Their similar loneliness draws them into an ambiguous bond. But Hu Meimei knows Xiao Wu cannot be her way out; she needs someone more powerful to change her fate. Xiao Wu understands this too, yet when it happens he cannot suppress his sense of loss. Facing the future, he becomes ever more awkward, trapped, and adrift.
Red Rose White Rose
Adapted from Eileen Chang's novella of the same name, the film follows Tong Zhenbao, a man returned from overseas, as he drifts between his friend's wife Wang Jiaorui and his own wife Meng Yanli. Caught among desire, morality, and the order of marriage, he repeatedly justifies himself while sinking deeper into compromise.
Center Stage
Centered on the life of 1930s film star Ruan Lingyu, the film interweaves dramatic reconstruction, archival footage, interviews, and discussions among the actors. It presents her achievements on screen, her emotional struggles, and the tragic fate shaped by the destructive force of public gossip.
The Spring River Flows East
Divided into two parts, Eight Years of Turmoil and Before Dawn, the film follows the family fates of Sufen, Zhang Zhongliang, and those around them. From the War of Resistance to postwar Shanghai, it portrays separation, betrayal, and shifting class fortunes. The result is a major epic of Chinese realist cinema.
New Women
Wei Ming, an educated woman, leaves home in pursuit of an independent life. But workplace oppression, public attacks, and economic hardship gradually push her toward despair. Through her experience, the film criticizes the old society's consumption, control, and stigmatization of women.
Song of the Fishermen
The poor fisherman Xu Fu and his family are crushed by boat owners, debt, and fishing capital. His children, Xiao Mao and Xiao Hou, struggle to survive as their lives are tossed about by poverty and unrest. Through the tragedy of one fishing family, the film reflects the suffering of ordinary people at the bottom of old China. With its famous title song and realist expression, it became a landmark of early Chinese cinema.
